How do I Get Into School During the School Day?

See the Enhanced Security Features Article Below

2-16 Early Release, 2-19 No School, 2-19 No Students

Hello, Martha Lake Mustangs and Families,

Theme for February – We Are Different and Alike, Week 2: Exploring Our Character

Here is our weekly message that goes along with this month’s theme of "We Are Different and Alike."  The message focuses on self-examination, reflection, and exploration of our own character.

We often talk about how Martha Lake Mustangs are Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. This message connects to our school-wide expectations that Mustangs are Respectful and Responsible.

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue, right? Since the beginning of time, people have explored unknown places to look for land, water, food, and treasure. Even today, we explore. We explore outer space and deep in the ocean, searching for whatever treasures these unknown places have to offer.

Did you know there is another kind of exploration? . . . You can actually go exploring inside yourself:

Inside each of us are undiscovered character traits. Blessed is the person who explores his or her own heart. ---author unknown

Ask yourself: If I explore my heart, what character traits would I discover there? What treasures are inside me that I could offer the world around me? Today, stop awhile and explore your heart for unknown treasure.

Attention All ‘DADS’ of

                            Martha Lake  Students!

         ‘Donuts with Dads’

Fathers and Father-figures,

On Friday, February 9 from (8:00 am – 9:00 am) we will have our annual ‘Donuts with Dads’. We’ll meet in the library with you and your student/s for FREE donuts and drinks and enjoy a presentation about our WATCH D.O.G.S.® (Dads Of Great Students) Program.  WATCH D.O.G.S.®  is an innovative program being used by schools across America helping to positively impact students by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures. It’s REALLY important!

The goal is to have you spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and provide an extra set of eyes and ears.

‘Dads, granddads, uncles, step-dads and adult brothers . . . this is your chance to have some special time with the student you know at Martha Lake in a fun atmosphere at school.  No special skills needed! However, you will need to complete a volunteer packet and have it submitted two weeks prior to your WatchD.O.G. shift/day.

In order to participate, you need to do two things:

1. Fill out the bottom portion of this slip and return it with your student (ASAP) saying you will attend (we need a head count for the food).

2.  Mark your calendars, and we’ll see you Friday February 9 at  8:00 amOfficial WATCH D.O.G.S.® Uniform T-shirts for Dads (and ‘My Hero’ T-shirts for students) will be available to order.

Enhanced Security Features Started 1-29-2018 at MLE

We started enhanced school security at Martha Lake Elementary on Monday, January 29, 2018. Doors of the school lock at 8:50 am, and open again at 3:11 pm.

To get inside the school, come to front doors nearest the flag pole. Press the white button at the panel on the far right side of the blue double-doors. The Martha Lake office will be able to see you and talk with you. They can unlock the door (it’s the one on the FAR RIGHT SIDE) to let you in.

You must still come to the main office, sign in, and get a visitor/volunteer badge. The enhanced security measures do not replace signing in/out at the office every time.

Feel free to contact us with any questions or comments at:, or via the contact information below. We are here to help.

A Message from Dr. McDuffy – Edmonds School District Superintendent

Dear Edmonds School District Families -

As you likely know, our District proudly serves a total of 21,317 students from the communities of Brier, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Woodway and unincorporated portions of Snohomish County. The diverse range of communities and individuals our District represents is what contributes to our uniqueness and beauty.

We want to ensure all families, including all those currently without school-age children who may be part of your neighborhood or social network are aware of our District’s:

     Kick Off to Kindergarten; and

Replacement School Programs and Operations Levy

Feb. 13 - Election Ballots Due: Replacement School Programs and Operations Levy

The Replacement School Programs and Operations Levy maintains the level of staffing, programs, and services we currently have in place in our schools.  Among the categories the funding supports are: additional teachers to address class size; paraeducators; safety; textbooks and instructional materials; and athletics, music, drama and student clubs and activities.

Ensuring accurate information is provided and known by all the households in our District is our goal. We have updated our online information to reflect recent questions we have received. Please visit 2018 Replacement School Programs and Operations Levy. Printed copies of materials are also available. Please call 425-431-7044 for copies.

Feb. 5 - 6:30-7:30 p.m. at 20 Elementary Schools: Kick Off to Kindergarten!

All families of kindergarten students who will begin school next fall are invited to join us for Kick Off to Kindergarten Monday, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m. The annual event is being held at all neighborhood K-6 schools.

Many homes with children eligible to start this fall could be your neighbors and currently do not have a child enrolled. Please mention to them that “Kick Off” is a chance to:

     Find out more about kindergarten

Meet the principal and office staff,  and

Obtain a registration packet to complete at home.

I encourage you to share the link for more information and a list of our 20 neighborhood elementary schools!

I want to extend my appreciation for your assistance in helping spread the word about these two very important communication efforts. Together, we make the Edmonds School District the amazing, supportive and inclusive school communities it is today and into the future.  Thank you!

Dr. Kristine McDuffy
